A Transgressive Space

sound installation & video projection (2016)

Exhibited at “Boundaries: Transmission & Transmutation” in Centrum Sztuki Galeria EL, Elbag, Poland, March 2016

Project Description

This video and sound installation explores the absence of a lost place in Buffalo, New York— the former Teck Theater, demolished over a decade ago and now an empty lot. The work highlights the void left by the architecture's absence, inviting viewers to reflect on the interplay between memory and erasure.

The central image of the video is deliberately blacked out, leaving only the visuals at the edges of the frame. This minimal visual experience is paired with a sensory soundscape recorded by the artist interacting with materials at the site. By removing representational imagery from the center, the work shifts focus to the auditory and peripheral, creating an immersive spatial experience.

Sound is played through lateral speakers, enveloping the audience and transforming the gallery space into a metaphorical reconstruction of the lost theater. This interplay between absence and presence invites viewers to engage with the site’s invisible history and reimagine the space it once occupied.
